Flogas Enterprise and Circle K Join Forces to Bring Bio-CNG to Ireland

(Flogas Enterprise/AltFuels) Businesses across Ireland who use heavy good vehicles can, for the first time, purchase carbon neutral fuel biomethane at select Circle K fuel stations nationwide for their CNG fleet. It comes after Flogas Enterprise signed a contract with Circle K to supply bio-CNG at its fueling stations across Ireland. Bio-CNG is currently available in Ballysimon Road, Limerick, Cashel Co. Tipperary, and Clonshaugh and Dublin Port in county Dublin.

The move is another step forward in reducing emissions from Ireland’s transport industry – one of the most difficult industries to decarbonize.

“Ireland’s commercial transport fleet makes up just 3% of vehicles on the road nationwide yet is responsible for approximately a fifth of transport’s carbon emissions.  Heavy goods vehicles operating on 100% bio-CNG can achieve significantly less carbon emissions,” said Barry Murphy, Commercial Director of Flogas Enterprise.

“At Flogas Enterprise, we are fully committed to supporting large enterprises, on their journey to sustainability. Our contract with Circle K comes at a time where we are observing an ever-increasing number of commercial fleets converting to CNG and bio-CNG on a global scale. While electricity is a proven alternate fuel for cars, electric solutions are currently not a viable option in heavy goods vehicles, however CNG and bio-CNG are, and are now being used by businesses throughout Europe. We are excited to work with Circle K to support the decarbonization of the transport network in Ireland, by offering this carbon neutral fuel to fleet operators in Ireland,” he added.

“We estimate that since bio-CNG has been available at the four Circle K outlets, almost 4,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, have been saved, that’s equivalent to over 40,000 carbon neutral kilometres,” commented Brian Connolly, Senior Fuels Manager, Circle K Ireland.

“Working with Flogas Enterprise, we began making a low carbon fuel alternative for commercial vehicles available with the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) in 2022. While CNG can reduce a HGV’s emissions by up to 22%, bio-CNG can reduce a HGV’s emissions by almost 100%,” he added.

Circle K Ireland is the first company to offer bio-CNG to the public at their stations. The biomethane is sourced at Green Gas Generation’s Anaerobic Digestion plant in Nurney, Co Kildare.

Flogas Enterprise was the first supplier in Ireland to supply biomethane through the gas network to companies like Tesco and Diageo and are now it is bringing this renewable biomethane to the transport sector in Ireland. READ MORE

Excerpt from RTE: Forecourt retailer Circle K is opening three new milesBIO HVO100 locations across its network nationwide, bringing to eight the total number of locations where customers can now get the fossil-free biofuel.

MilesBIO HVO100 is a completely fossil-free biofuel made from waste, by-products and derived products not intended for human consumption from the food industry and can be used to power diesel vehicles.

HVO alternative diesel offers an up to 90% reduction in carbon emissions over regular diesel.

The three new milesBIO HVO100 pumps are located at Circle K Monaghan, City North on the M1 and Kill South on the M7/N7 in Co Kildare.

The fuel is also available at Circle K's Dublin Port forecourt, the Circle K site on the M8 at Cashel in Co Tipperary; Circle K's outlet on the M9 in Rathcrogue, Co Carlow; the Circle K on the M8 at Gortore, Fermoy in Co. Cork and Circle K Express in Lifford in Co Donegal.

The company also said it has plans for two additional sites to be unveiled in the coming months.

Circle K said that through the introduction of milesBIO HVO100, it is supporting businesses with fleet operations in reducing their carbon emissions.

Companies such as cooking oil supplier Frylite Solutions, freight and logistics operator DFDS, and Musgraves MarketPlace have all now partnered with Circle K and introduced milesBIO HVO100 to their operations to reduce emissions across their respective fleets.

Circle K's own logistics fleet, responsible for over 1,000 truck deliveries weekly, is now running entirely on HVO.

The company said this has resulted in a reduction of up to 90% in carbon emissions for all fuel deliveries across the network, contributing significantly to the country's carbon reduction targets. READ MORE
