CBMNet Funding Announcements; Includes Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships

(Crossing Biological Membranes Network) At CBMNet we foster collaborations between academia and industry to tackle research challenges in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (IBBE).

We are working to understand the mechanisms by which substances are transported into, within, and out of cell factories, which will lead to the development of enabling technologies that are crucial for the future of almost all cell-based IBBE applications.

As part of the strategy to achieve these objectives our network provides various funding opportunities (please see below).

PROOF OF CONCEPT FUNDING
Details: To allow consortia to generate the preliminary information required to establish the feasibility of their proposed approaches, with the target of generating competitive bids to IB Catalyst and other relevant funding calls

VACATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Details: for undergraduate students to carry out research projects of up to 10 weeks. Preference will be given to projects with industrial involvement, with secondments in an industry laboratory encouraged. We also welcome applications that will develop outreach and policy activities.
Amount available: £185 per week, for up to ten weeks, plus £500 for consumables

INDUSTRIAL-ACADEMIC EXCHANGE GRANTS
Details: To support the development of new teams to transfer knowledge from academia to industry and vice versa. For example, grants can be used for a CBMNet member to visit another member or for CBMNet members to accompany a specialist to a conference.
Amount available: up to £1,000 per grant. 5 grants available in total

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT GRANTS
Details: To allow our members to carry out public engagement activities related to the CBMNet remit. For example, Café Scientifique, school visits. We are open to new public engagement ideas.

OPEN INNOVATION MEETING GRANTS
Details: To allow industrial CBMNet members to engage with selected members of CBMNet, in the form of a meeting. For example, the industrial host to hold a confidential meeting to discuss a specific research challenge, to engage with a small, focused group of experts to identify possible solutions. Or, industry host could hold a non-confidential meeting exploring CBMNet relevant scientific theme, with a view to generating project ideas which could form the basis of collaborative funding applications. Meetings are expected to be for 1 or 2 days and include at least 6 CBMNet members.
Amount available: up to £2,000 per meeting

BUSINESS INTERACTION VOUCHERS
Details: To support a collaboration that can be any defined piece of work by an academic partner for an industrial partner. Just some examples of the way this funding could be used are: to help build confidence between new partners; to provide consumable funds for a specific piece of work; to support an undergraduate to work on a specific project during the summer vacation, to complete a literature review.
