CALL FOR PAPERS: SUM 2020 – 5th Symposium on Urban Mining and Circular Economy — May 18-20, 2020 — Bologna, Italy DEADLINE: extended to March 10, 2020

Following the great success of the fourth edition held in 2018, which saw the participation of almost 250 delegates from a wide variety of countries, SUM 2020 / 5th Symposium on Urban Mining and Circular Economy will be held in May 2020 in the premises of the University of Bologna.

To achieve a virtuous application and optimization of current practice, urban mining and circular economy are dependent on the appropriate combination of three worlds (TRIANGLE concept): research and technology (private and public) / administration, economy and industry / policy and regulation. This combination is equally important in other fields of waste management, although is of paramount relevance for a Circular Economy. SUM 2020 will focus on all relevant and innovative aspects relating to these three worlds.

The Symposium will last three days and will include oral sessions, a poster session and a technical tour. The following topics, among others, will be extensively discussed: waste avoidance, sources and characterization of resources in urban areas, technologies for the extraction of materials, techniques of waste segregation, separate collection, takeback programs, recirculation pathways and markets, recovery of abandoned urban areas, carbon and water footprint of material recycling, economic and legal aspects, urban mining and circular economy concepts in developing countries.

Advantageous conditions will be offered to companies wishing to display their practical experience and innovative technologies. Meeting opportunities will also be created to foster cooperation between those involved in industrial production and material recycling. READ MORE

Full papers must be prepared using the paper template provided and submitted as a MS WORD file attachment using the online submission form no later than ~~31st January 2020~~ . Extended to March 10, 2020

Contributions in the form of short papers (3-4 pages) will also be accepted. The official languages of the Symposium are English and Italian. Papers may be submitted for oral or poster presentation, in English or Italian (or both) for inclusion in English and Italian sessions, respectively.

Papers will be selected following evaluation by an international panel of referees. Acceptance of papers will be notified to the corresponding author by 15th February 2020. Authors not receiving an e-mail notifying the acceptance of their paper should contact the Organising Secretariat.

Accepted papers will qualify the presenting author alone for payment of a discounted author’s registration fee, which must be paid strictly at the time of papers acceptance. Authors presenting their work in an oral session will also be requested to submit their PowerPoint presentations no later than 4th May 2020.

All papers accepted to the SUM2020 will be published on a dedicated volume of Symposium proceedings. Additionally, a considerable number of leading papers will be processed for publication on special thematic issues on international renowned journals. READ MORE

We wish to thank all authors who submitted their papers within the deadline of January 31st. The response to SUM 2020 call for papers has been incredibly great: we received papers from every continent, attesting that SUM has become, over the years, a leading international event.

The SUM Scientific Committees, composed of more than 60 members, have already begun to review the proposals in order to create a well-balanced programme for the plenary, oral and poster sessions. A high number of proposals for Networking sessions has also been submitted.

In particular, members of the committees have underlined the need to extensively discuss some of the hottest topics in the field during specific sessions or workshops chaired by selected scientists.

Late proposals on all the other conference topics will also be accepted within the same deadline.
