Biofuels such as biodiesel are produced from natural sources and help to improve environmental conditions while increasing energy sustainability and security. But manufacturing biodiesel requires close analysis of its composition. Monitoring sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (C), phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg) is necessary, since these elements can form undesirable compounds that may cause engine failures, affect emission performance and control, and may be subject to government regulation and fuel specification limits. In addition, the analysis of the sulfur (S) concentration is critical. If used cooking oil from the food industry is utilized, monitoring other elements such as chlorine (Cl), for example, may be important as well. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) instruments are frequently used for biofuels analysis, especially now that recent advances in technology have reduced costs. New advances in ICP and XRF technologies for elemental analysis offer distinct advantages for determination of elements in a variety of processes within biodiesel production. In addition, the same technology also can be used to check for oxygen content to prove the fuel is really biogenic.
