Letter to Editor: Renewable Resource
by John Phillips (Daily Press) I am deeply concerned about the EPA’s recent decision to alter the original intent of the Renewable Fuel Standard with a reduction to the renewable volume obligation not only because of the devastating effect it will have on the rural economy, but because of the message it sends to policy makers about ethanol and its viability as a clean burning, renewable fuel source. .
I am the third generation of our family business Phillips Energy, Inc. and since our founding in 1946, we have proudly provided heating oil and fuels to Tidewater Virginia. Realizing the importance, affordability, and performance of renewable fuels, in 2009 we built a 24-hour fueling facility in Gloucester that offers alternative fuels, including e85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline to be used in specifically designed “Flex-Fuel” vehicles.
The reality of corn ethanol is that it is changing the way we produce and consume fuel in this country. Unlike the finite amount of petroleum that exists today, we grow a new crop of corn every year. By doing so, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is equivalent to taking more than 20 million vehicles off of the road. READ MORE
