Innovative Micro Bio-Unit Can Turn Home Rubbish into Cooking Gas
(Clean Fuels Community) Home waste could be an irritable nuisance, especially in rural areas where proper collection of waste doesn’t exist. But this trash can become a real treasure. In the iconic film Back to the Future Doc Brown is seen throwing trash into his “Mr. Fusion” machine where it is turned into gas. Well, thanks to HomeBiogas, an Israeli start up, the future is already here. Their self-contained biodegradable units can turn any kitchen waste or animal manure, that otherwise would have contaminated the ground, into cooking gas.
This is the first home model machine that can harness biogas from food waste and shrink the amount of trash that is being disposed on a daily basis. The TevaGas unit can be situated in Zoos, schools and other public venues as well as in private homes. Once this micro bio-unit is being installed in the backyard it takes between 2 to 4 weeks until gas is produced.

As part of a pilot program the town received several units to help its citizens dispose their trash and at the same time create their source of energy. Following the success of this pilot the Dominican Republic has ordered some 50 units for remote villages in order to handle waste management and reduce deforestation. Many of the villagers would cut trees and use them for heating while TevaGas units can provide them with clean energy.
There are some 2.7 billion people in the world who live in such “disconnected” communities. This small biogas system can help them solve both problems – reducing the amount of home waste and providing them with liquid gas – for heating or cooking.
