Gas Prices Reach a Six-Month High Just in Time for Summer

by Thomas Richard (  … One thing that is helping to keep gas prices down is the introduction of ethanol into the mix. Ethanol, made primarily from distilled corn, replaces 10 percent of gasoline and is much cheaper than refined oil. Some gas stations have already started selling E15, which is 15 percent ethanol. The 430-store convenience store (C-store) chain Kum & Go plans to roll out E15 at another 100 more locations by either adding new E15 pumps or retrofitting others. That’s according to company’s executive Jim Pirolli, who spoke at the Nebraska Ethanol Board’s Emerging Issue Conference last Thursday.

Pirolli told conference attendees that “we sell more E85 in Nebraska than any other state, and we expect to sell more E15,” adding: “People want cheap gas, they want the option.” C-stores like Mapco, Murphy USA Inc., Thorntons Inc., Cenex and Protec are already selling the E15 blend, much to the chagrin of the oil industry.    READ MORE
