City’s Biofuel Experiment Ends

…The city first fuelled a bus on a blend of diesel and cooking oil in 2007 as part of a one-year trial. Five more city buses, two garbage packers and a recycling truck were added to a second-phase trial a year later.
…Buses experienced “major” engine failure, which the city’s transit contractor blamed on the biodiesel blend. Engine manufacturers warned the city that using biofuel would void any warranties, Johnston said.
To add to the problem, he said, Owen Sound’s local supplier was unable to keep up with demand, so the city was forced to purchase soy-based biofuel from an out-of-area company. READ MORE
