University of Dayton Building $850K Outdoor Algae Lab

The University of Dayton Research Institute will start construction July 9 on a new $850,000 outdoor algae lab at its River Campus building to develop advanced jet fuels and address carbon emissions.

The lab at 1700 S. Patterson Blvd., formerly NCR Corp. headquarters, is scheduled to be completed in November and will create two to three full-time jobs, officials said.

The new facility will test systems developed at UDRI’s current indoor algae lab in an outdoor setting, away from laboratory-controlled conditions, said Sukh Sidhu, head of UDRI’s Energy Technologies and Materials group.

…As the largest consumer of aviation fuel, the U.S. Air Force is funding the research in an effort to reduce both its carbon emissions and dependence on foreign oil, UDRI officials said.  READ MORE
