Indian States Fast-Track Jatropha 2.0, a Special Biofuels Digest Report

These are not the old style monoculture plantations that led to the central government’s recent Jatropha policy review. Rather, they are evidence that the initial findings of the review are already well understood and guiding new plantations.”  …

Uttar Pradesh has already begun cultivating Jatropha on what will eventually be 40% of the total wasteland in the state, roughly 1.6 million hectares (4 million acres). Unlike previous large scale efforts at Jatropha cultivation, the land will not be taken over by the state or leased to corporate growers, but will be given to the local farmers, who will continue to grow food crops on their existing agricultural land as before. Village panchayats (local assemblies), aided by biodiesel refiners, will provide farmers with the  technical assistance necessary for effective cultivation.   READ MORE
