Despite Editorial, Ethanol’s Not So Bad

by James Gough  (Fredericksburg Free Lance Star)  …My primary concern with the editorial, however, is the certainty with which the writer declares, “we know now that ethanol production actually degrades the environment and causes increases in food prices. In fact, the World Bank has asked governments to discontinue ethanol production for that very reason.”

I’m not an investigative reporter, but a little checking revealed another report from the World Bank that “argues that the effect of biofuels on food prices (in 2007-2008) has not been as large as originally thought.”

…As for the environmental unfriendliness of ethanol, the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center website refutes the same ethanol claims put forth by the editorial writer.

Undoubtedly, there is much to consider in the discussion of biofuels; I would ask the editorial writer to not make unequivocally negative statements about ethanol when there apparently is a great deal of positive evidence and information being reported by subject matter experts.  READ MORE original editorial
