DARPA Contract Awarded to Develop Jet Biofuel from Algae
On January 26, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) a contract to help develop an alternative to petroleum-based jet fuel from agricultural and aquacultural feedstocks. The contract is worth up to $25 million if all phases are completed. The agency’s BioFuels Program is trying to reduce the military’s dependence on traditional fuels by exploring alternative fuels and fuel efficiency measures. Under the contact, SAIC will lead a team of academic and industrial organizations to develop an alternative to jet fuel from algae at a cost target of $3 per gallon. READ MORE
