Colorado Student Awarded $50,000 for Algae Biofuels Study
(Algae Industry Magazine) Seventeen-year-old Sara Volz, of Colorado Springs, CO, has been awarded a $50,000 scholarship for her science project, “Enhancing Algae Biofuels: Investigation of the Environmental and Enzymatic Factors Effecting Algal Lipid Synthesis.” Her research demonstrates how algae biofuels have great potential as a power source; that stress-induced lipid accumulation has the ability to increase that potential; and she provided an analysis of the regulatory factors involved in lipid synthesis. A senior at Cheyenne Mountain High School, Sara plans to major in biochemistry in college, working toward her goal of becoming a research scientist.
The Davidson Fellows Scholarship program offers $50,000, $25,000 and $10,000 college scholarships to students 18 or younger, who have created significant projects that have the potential to benefit society in the fields of science, technology, mathematics, literature, music and philosophy.
