Ceres, Inc., Introduces Dedicated Energy Crop Seeds
California-based crop company Ceres Inc. has introduced two varieties each of switchgrass and high-biomass sorghum specifically designed to boost energy crop yields. Early buyers of the seeds include DOE-backed biofuels companies building demonstration cellulosic ethanol refineries as well as forward-thinking farmers seeking a toehold in an emerging market. It is expected that spreading the production base of cellulosic feedstocks will place crops closer to their constituent refineries, thus cutting transport and storage costs and making cellulosic ethanol cost-competitive versus other fuels.
