However, around that time, biofuel producers began to struggle as a result of the economic downturn, and so it wasn’t an ideal time to launch a trade organization with membership dues, she said. But there was still a need to educate people on advanced biofuels, she explained.

“Anybody who thinks that biofuels are just corn ethanol and soybean biodiesel needs to know and expand their understanding” of the industry, Ivancic said. While other biofuel trade associations are doing a good job promoting first generation biofuels, “we want to fill in the gaps from where these other organizations leave off,” she explained, with a specific focus on sustainable non-food feedstocks.

Advanced Biofuels USA plans to provide broader understanding for a host of second generation biofuels, including algae-based biofuels and so-called “drop-in” fuels such as green crude, which require no new infrastructure, Ivancic noted. READ MORE

I recently spoke with Joanne Ivancic, the founder and director of the recently formed Advanced Biofuels USA … (She) perceived that a whole contingent of biofuels developers were not being either recognized or represented.
And surely she is right.
Ethanol and biodiesel both have their trade organizations, but no one is representing manufacturers of petroleum-like synfuels made from biomass, biobutanol and other heavy alcohols derived from biomass, or, for that matter, pyrolysis oil, biogas, bio-based DME, or so-called “green diesel” which is not the same as biodiesel. No organization is actively representing cellulosic ethanol either. READ MORE

In Maryland, a trade association has been formed to advocate and lobby in behalf of second generation biofuels. Advanced Biofuels USA will serve individuals, farm co-ops, start-up companies and commercial-scale producers a voice in influencing policy. Bob Kozak, president of Atlantic Biomass Conversions, told Ethanol Producer that “All of us working in the trenches know we need help telling our story in Washington but we don’t have the time or money to do it right.” he said.
