Biofuel Target Will Add £35 Every Year to the Cost of Running a Car
by Louise Gray (The Telegraph) Drivers will be forced to pay an extra £35 a year due to a European climate change target, a report by Oxfam has found.
…The report states that a family currently spends an average £840 a year on running a car but that figure will rise to £875 as a result of the target.
Only 4.5 per cent of transport fuel in Britain is currently from biofuels, but that will rise to 10 per cent by 2020.
The report found that the target is badly backfiring by causing hunger in the developing world as the demand for the biodiesel will mean that farmers grow maize for make fuel for cars rather than feeding people.
…A meeting of ministers in Cyprus this week will discuss the EU post-2020 renewable energy strategy including whether to set new targets.
A Department for Transport spokesman said ministers are looking at ways to make the biofuels target more “flexible”. READ MORE Access report
