ALMS Goes Greener with MICHELIN
(Michelin) The USA’s American Le Mans Series endurance racing championship, which was first organised in 1999, has released its new slogan: ‘Global Leader, Green Racing’. Meanwhile, MICHELIN will continue to back the 2010 MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge which will cover all nine rounds of the coming season.
In 2007, the ALMS forged closer ties with the US Department of Energy, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and SAE International with a view to promoting and developing the use of green technologies in motor sport. MICHELIN, which has worked for more than 15 years to reduce the environmental footprint of its tyres, enjoys a close association with this programme in the form of the MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge which sets out to reward the most energy-efficient performances.
The past three years have seen the increasing use of green fuels in the ALMS, including the introduction of E10 in 2007, and of E85 in 2008. Last season saw several teams switch to bioethanol (Drayson Racing Lola Judd and Flying Lizard Porsche, both of which compete on Michelin tyres), biobutanol (Dyson Racing Lola Mazda) or hybrid technology (Corsa Motorsports Ginetta-Zytek).
| In 2010, MICHELIN will continue to put its weight behind the MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge which rewards those teams that best succeed in optimising the performance of their cars with regard to their impact on the environment. At each round, prizes will go to the best-placed GT and prototype entries.Last year saw several MICHELIN partner-constructors (Acura, Corvette and Porsche) win the top prize, and the competition has become a race within the race, with numerous teams rising to the challenge by developing green technologies in their bid to claim the MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge.
