by Mary Rosenthal (Algal Biomass Organization)  As we all basked in the glory of the annual Independence Day festivities, we were reminded once again about the importance of “Buying American.” Nowhere was this more evident than in Congress, where several elected officials called on the House to pass the “All-American Flag Act”, which instructs federal agencies to purchase only flags made entirely in the U.S. “from articles, materials, or supplies 100% of which are grown, produced, or manufactured in the United States.”

Current law mandates only a 50 percent “blend” of US materials in our flag.

Wouldn’t it be great if there could be similar consensus on fuels?  If it’s so important that our national symbol of freedom – the flag – be Made in America, then shouldn’t it be as important that a key instrument of freedom – the fuel that powers our military and our economy – be Made in America?
